In a significant crackdown on smuggling activities, Customs intelligence officials have apprehended five individuals implicated in the illicit transport of a staggering 27.2 million Indian rupees into Bangladesh via Chittagong port. The large sum was discovered within four cartons in a container late Sunday night. Customs authorities are currently investigating the authenticity of the seized currency, as there is uncertainty regarding whether the notes are genuine or counterfeit. Mainul Khan, the Director General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation, informed reporters on Monday that Bangladesh lacks the equipment necessary to accurately identify counterfeit foreign currencies. He pointed out that a majority of Indian currency seized in the country has historically been counterfeit, leading to concerns that this recent seizure may follow suit. The container was processed through the Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) agent, Flash Trade International, and was loaded onto the MV Prosper, a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, at the Port of Jebel Ali in Dubai on September 12. After a brief stop in Colombo, the ship reached Chittagong port on September 16. The officials revealed that the large stash of rupees was cleverly concealed among home appliances, marking this incident as a notable example of transnational crime.
