Incident in Dry Dock: Support Failure Leads to Tilting of Training Ship Betelgeuze
On July 17, an unfortunate incident involved the training vessel 'Betelgeuze,' which tilted while docked in a dry dock. This round-hulled ship, characterized by its S-shaped keel, encountered issues during its lifting process in an air-operated floating dock. Typically, when lifting a vessel, a slight list to either the port or starboard side is required. However, during the lifting procedure, the 'Betelgeuze' struck a support on the port side that failed due to a material defect, causing the ship to tip. Fortunately, a guide pole situated in the dock played a crucial role in preventing further tilting. There were seven crew members on board at the time, all of whom were able to safely disembark. Currently, the 'Betelgeuze' has been returned to an upright position at Waalhaven, where it awaits necessary dock repairs. These repairs will facilitate a thickness survey essential for the vessel's maintenance. In the meantime, preparations are underway to restore the ship to its proper condition. Incident Averted: 'Betelgeuze' Successfully Stabilized at Rotterdam Dock
On July 17, 2025, the cadet training vessel 'Betelgeuze' experienced a concerning moment while docked at the Holland Ship Repair facility in Rotterdam. During a scheduled inspection, the ship tilted to its port side, causing the entire floating dock to list. Fortunately, swift actions ensured the crew’s safety, and no injuries were reported. The incident resulted in part of the scaffolding breaking off, yet the vessel remained afloat. Originally slated for docking in August, the 'Betelgeuze' was welcomed earlier due to efficient preparations that took advantage of the equipment from its sister ship, 'Castor', which had previously completed its drydocking. This strategic move not only saved time but also reduced costs, illustrating effective resource management. Following the alarming tilt, the crew reported a loud bang as the dock was being lowered, but by the end of the afternoon, the 'Betelgeuze' was righted and floating securely once more. Thankfully, the incident did not result in any damage to the vessel.
