On November 4, 2017, a 50-year-old boater named Eugene Russell went missing approximately 25 miles off the coast of North Miami Beach. His wife reported him overdue after he failed to return from a planned outing on a 22-foot yellow open concept boat, originally set to dock on the evening of November 3. The search effort was initiated by the US Coast Guard following a communication from the cruising vessel 'Betty K VIII'. The crew reported spotting a yellow boat with an individual—believed to be Russell—waving frantically while donned in a yellow life jacket and gesturing towards his engine. This sighting prompted the Coast Guard Sector Miami watchstanders to coordinate extensive rescue operations. They dispatched an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Miami, and redirected the Coast Guard Cutter Richard Etheridge to the search area.
