BG Ireland Detained in Grangemouth Over Serious Deficiencies
On November 6, 2025, the vessel 'BG Ireland' faced detention at Grangemouth due to eight identified deficiencies, with three being categorized as serious enough to warrant such action. The critical issues included: 1) Emergency systems - Crew showed inadequate familiarization with emergency protocols; 2) Fire safety - There was a notable lack of crew performance evaluation and familiarity; 3) ISM - The ISM certificate did not meet necessary standards. Following an evaluation and necessary corrections, 'BG Ireland' was released and departed Grangemouth shortly afterward. The ship made its way to Rotterdam, arriving on November 11, and has been anchored at the Hutchinson Delta 2 Terminal as of November 13.
Successful Completion of Engine Repairs for BG Ireland in Emden
The 'BG Ireland' has successfully resolved a technical issue that necessitated an unexpected visit to Emder Werft und Dock GmbH (EWD) in Emden. A malfunction linked to a broken connecting rod bolt led to substantial damage to the vessel's MAK 9-cylinder 4-stroke engine. In response, EWD engineers conducted a thorough dismantling of the engine block, meticulously salvaging reusable components. A new, state-of-the-art MAK engine, weighing in at 120 tons, was then delivered to the shipyard and installed utilizing a floating crane—a complex and rare challenge, as noted by project engineer Dennis König. Over the coming three weeks, the team will focus on reinstalling the ship's piping and coupling systems, followed by a rigorous testing phase that commenced on October 23. The 'BG Ireland' set sail from Emden on October 26 at 10:40 p.m., with Grangemouth as its next destination, anticipating arrival by October 29.

The cargo ship 'BG Ireland' encountered a significant setback when it experienced an engine failure approximately 14 nautical miles off St Catherine’s Point, Isle of Wight, on June 20, 2025. This incident occurred just one day after the vessel commenced its journey from Cork. Following the malfunction, the ship was towed to Rotterdam on June 24, where her cargo of containers was successfully discharged. Subsequently, the 'BG Ireland' was towed to Emden, arriving there on July 18, and has been laid up in the inner port since July 16, according to reports up to August 22. At this point, it remains uncertain whether 'BG Ireland' will resume service with BG Freight Line, or if her charter has reached its conclusion.
