Tragic Collision in Suriname Waters Claims Life of Fisherman
On April 5, 2022, a devastating maritime incident occurred in the North Atlantic, approximately 35 nautical miles from the coast of Paramaribo, Suriname. The offshore support vessel 'BGP Prospector' collided with a wooden fishing vessel at the coordinates 006 30 12 N, 55 58 18 W. Remarkably, the 'BGP Prospector' emerged from the collision without damage; however, the fishing boat was not as fortunate and subsequently sank. Tragically, among the six fishermen aboard, one lost their life as a result of the accident. In light of the incident, the Maritime Authority of Suriname (MAS) has initiated an investigation, particularly focusing on the alleged illegal fishing activities occurring within Suriname's exclusion zone.
