In a significant diplomatic move, the United States has imposed sanctions on the vessel 'Marlin' due to its involvement in the construction of the contentious Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This action, taken by the Biden administration, reflects efforts to intensify pressure on Russia while maintaining a careful balance with Germany. According to a report submitted to Congress on November 22, 2021, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the sanctioning of Transadria Ltd., a Cyprus-based entity suspected of serving as a Russian front, in relation to the 'Marlin's' pipeline operations. Alongside the 'Marlin', the 'Blue Ship' was mentioned in the report for its role in the pipeline's construction. However, it escaped sanctions due to its ownership by a government-affiliated organization based in Germany. The Nord Stream 2 project was fully completed in September, with the initial of its two lines already operational and filled with gas. The U.S. has consistently opposed the development of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, yet it continues to expand its sanctions list. This strategic extension aims to exert influence without escalating tensions with German leaders, who are committed to seeing the project finalized. The inclusion of these vessels falls under a legal requirement for the administration to provide Congress with updates every 90 days, as outlined in legislation passed in 2020, designed to impede or halt progress on the pipeline.
