Working Conditions Aboard the Boi-Branco

On May 30, 2019, a significant fire broke out aboard the vehicle carrier 'Boi Branco' while it was docked at the new Drapetsona pier in Keratsini, located just west of Piraeus. The incident prompted an extensive emergency response, involving three patrol boats, eleven tugboats, and a dedicated fire brigade consisting of 25 personnel and eight fire engines. Fortunately, all 41 crew members were successfully evacuated without injury. As safety measures were implemented, the 2nd Kerathini Port Department of the Piraeus Central Port Authority took action by detaining the vessel until the classification society provided a Certificate of Seaworthiness. In an effort to prevent environmental contamination, anti-pollution barriers were strategically deployed around the ship. After a challenging three hours, firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze. Following the incident, the 'Boi Branco' resumed its operations, departing from the Drapetsona pier on June 21 at 6:45 PM, and set sail towards Cartagena, with an estimated arrival date of June 25.
