Emergency Medivac Operation Near Algoa Bay Saves Two Crew Members
On the evening of August 28, 2018, at 7:55 p.m., the NSRI Port Elizabeth launched the lifeboat "Spirit of Toft" to execute a crucial medevac operation. The mission involved the extraction of two injured crew members from the vessel "Bona," which had raised an alarm the previous day while navigating the volatile waters off the Transkei Coast. Both crew members were severely injured after a powerful wave hit the ship, forcing them against onboard machinery. The situation came to light after communications between the ship and Telkom Maritime Radio Services prompted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) to act swiftly. A Government Health EMS duty doctor established contact with the vessel's medical team, assessing the injuries and recommending immediate evacuation for both crew members. One individual suffered a significant laceration to his thigh in addition to head injuries, while the other sustained injuries to his head and ear. Given the favorable sea conditions at the time, the ship's Captain agreed to head towards Algoa Bay, allowing effective preparations for the evacuation. The MRCC subsequently updated the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and readied the NSRI team in Port Elizabeth. During the journey, both patients were stabilized and closely monitored. The "Spirit of Toft" successfully rendezvoused with the "Bona" three miles off the coast of Port Elizabeth. Two NSRI rescue swimmers and one EMS paramedic were deployed aboard the vessel, where one patient, able to walk, was transferred onto the lifeboat using a Bosun's stretcher. Both patients were brought safely ashore under the care of NSRI medics and EMS paramedics. Subsequently, they were transported to a hospital via EMS ambulance, reported to be in stable condition for further medical attention.
