On September 17, 2024, the naval base in Kiel welcomed the arrival of the 'British Guardian', a strategic asset aimed at bolstering maritime operations. This latest addition will replace the decommissioned tug 'Fehmarn', as Kiel prepares for its operational transformation. Set to be renamed 'Borkum' in 2025, the 'British Guardian' will fill crucial gaps in the fleet's capabilities, particularly for deep-sea maneuvers and emergency situations. With aging vessels like the 'Spiekeroog' and 'Fehmarn' no longer fit for service, the need for a modern tug has never been more pressing. In a proactive investment, the Ministry of Finance allocated 24 million euros in 2022 for the acquisition of two new tugs. The first of these, the 'Rügen', a 2003 build, was procured from Turkey in May 2023 and is currently stationed in Wilhelmshaven, pending necessary improvements before it can enter service. The 'British Guardian' embarked on its journey from Abidjan on August 28, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the operational readiness of Kiel's naval forces.

On June 20, 2024, the BAAINBw officially awarded the contract for a second sea-going tug to enhance the capabilities of the German Navy. This acquisition follows the previous purchase of the tug 'Rügen' in 2023. The newly acquired vessel, aptly named 'Borkum', is a second-hand tug from the civilian market, similar to its predecessor. This strategic move by the BAAINBw addresses a critical need within the Navy, providing a temporary solution for the next six years until the development of a successor system is finalized. The arrival of 'Borkum' alongside 'Rügen' marks a significant transition from the aging fleet, replacing the over 50-year-old tugs 'Wangerooge', 'Spiekeroog', and 'Fehmarn', which have become economically unviable for repairs. The 'Borkum' is set to be delivered to Kiel in September, with commissioning planned for October. Following its acquisition, a brief conversion period is slated for the summer of 2025. During this time, essential military modifications will be made, including the installation of military-grade radio and navigation systems. To maximize efficiency and reduce downtime, the 'Borkum' will be utilized for crew training until its military adaptation is complete.
