The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has taken legal action against the captain of the cargo vessel 'Boshi 58' and its operator, Hong Kong-based Fu Ye Shipping, following a tragic accident that occurred on May 25, 2023. During the transfer of a ship’s pilot, a malfunction with the pilot ladder led to severe injuries. Investigations revealed that the pilot ladder was not only improperly stored but also had not undergone regular inspections, significantly compromising its safety. Both the captain and the master of Fu Ye Shipping admitted their guilt in court, resulting in fines of $5,300 for the captain and $32,000 for the company. These penalties were imposed for violations of Australia's Navigation Act of 2012 and a maritime order issued in 2023. The incident underscores the critical responsibility that ship’s crews have in ensuring pilot ladders are properly maintained and rigged, as the failure to do so can result in dire outcomes.
