Tanker 'Besiktas Orient' Towed to Safety in Brest Following Propulsion Failure

Feb 22, 2016 11:21

On February 20, 2016, at 5:37 AM, the tanker 'Besiktas Orient,' while navigating from Great Yarmouth to Saint Nazaire, experienced a significant propulsion failure. As the crew endeavored to rectify the situation, the vessel drifted due east, challenged by a westward wind blowing at 50 km/h. The CROSS Corsen was notified when the ship found itself 35 nautical miles west of Pointe du Raz. By 2 PM, to mitigate its drift 24 miles west of Pointe du Raz, the crew attempted to anchor, but the vessel continued to drift slightly eastward. With deteriorating weather conditions threatening the tanker’s proximity to the coast, the maritime prefect mandated action to avert potential disaster before 7 PM. Accordingly, at 4:10 PM, the maritime prefect of the Atlantic authorized a towing agreement with Abeille International. The tug 'Abeille Bourbon' departed from its berth in Camaret at 5:10 PM, en route to assist the distressed tanker. The towing operation commenced upon the tug's arrival at 7:50 PM. The convoy successfully navigated to Brest, arriving in the late hours of the night. The 'Besiktas Orient' was securely docked at the CIB Brest Shipyard by 1:45 AM on February 21. This incident highlights the swift response and coordination among maritime authorities to ensure the safety of vessels at sea.
