Icebreaker Stettin Collides with Richelieu in Kiel Canal Incident
On August 20, 2011, at approximately 2 p.m., the icebreaker 'Stettin' (783 gt, IMO: 8882923) collided with the stern of the cargo vessel 'Richelieu' while maneuvering to moor at the northern lock of the Kiel Canal in Brunsbuettel. The impact resulted in minimal damage to the Stettin, whereas the Richelieu suffered noticeable dents at its stern. The Richelieu, which had departed from Hamburg earlier that day en route to Kaliningrad, was temporarily docked at the railway pilings in Brunsbuettel for investigations that continued until 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Stettin, originally traveling from Hamburg to Rendsburg, was cleared to resume its journey an hour after the collision and successfully arrived in Rendsburg at 6:40 p.m.
