Engine Troubles for Bressay Bank Near Peterhead
On August 25, 2019, at 1:40 p.m., the 'Bressay Bank' issued a PAN PAN distress signal due to engine failure while located three miles north of Peterhead. Having departed from Peterhead late on August 24 at 10:30 p.m., the vessel found itself in need of immediate assistance. In response to the emergency, the Fraserburgh lifeboat 'Willie and May Gall' quickly mobilized and arrived at the scene shortly afterward. RNLI volunteer Nathan Whyte boarded the 'Bressay Bank' to facilitate communication between the crew and rescue teams. A successful tow was established, allowing the lifeboat to guide the stricken vessel into Peterhead Harbour, where local pilot boats took over the operation. Coastguard personnel were on hand to assist with the berthing process. Following the operation, a debriefing session was conducted at the lifeboat station with Nathan reuniting with the rest of the crew. Search and rescue operations concluded at 5 p.m. Later that night, at 12:30 a.m., the 'Bressay Bank' resumed its journey, setting course for Lerwick with an estimated arrival time of 5 p.m. For more details and visuals, refer to the report linked here: https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/north-east/fraserburgh/1826604/rnli-fraserburgh-tows-their-biggest-boat-ever/
Fisheries Clash: Four French Trawlers Seized Near the Faroe Islands
In a significant enforcement action, Faroese authorities apprehended four French fishing trawlers—namely, the "Haltenbank Pairtrawl", the "Cap Saint Georges", the "Andre Leduc", and the "Bressay-Bank Pair Tr"—for operating in a restricted fishing zone situated east of Fugløy Island. This incident took place on June 19, 2016, when the Coastguard vessel "Tjaldrið" discovered the two pair fishing teams in violation of the area closure instituted just days prior due to a high volume of small fish. The apprehended trawlers were escorted to Kollafjørður, where they docked later that night. The skippers of the two trawlers belonging to the Boulogne-based company Euronor maintain that they were not adequately informed about the closure. As a result, they have opted to contest the imposed penalties in court. Legal representatives for the company have already arranged the necessary bond to address the situation. Faroese authorities had communicated the closure to their French counterparts; however, this crucial information failed to reach the crews of the four trawlers until after their boarding. Notably, the pair teams had just commenced fishing, with only a minimal catch aboard at the time of their seizure.
