Tugboat Rescue: 'Zeus' Successfully Tow 'Burak Bayraktar' After Initial Setback

Dec 07, 2013 11:34

On the evening of December 6, the tugboat 'Ginger' encountered a challenge while attempting to establish a towing connection with the cargo vessel 'Burak Bayraktar'. Unfortunately, the towing wire became entangled in the propeller, leading to the tug's urgent need for repairs in Den Helder. Fast forward to December 7 at 10:15 a.m., the situation took a turn as the tug 'Zeus' arrived on the scene, confirming that the ship was securely held in position by its anchors. Demonstrating swift action, the 'Zeus' successfully established a towing connection and guided the 'Burak Bayraktar' towards deeper waters. By 1:30 p.m., the combined efforts of the 'Zeus' and another tug, 'Hunter', ensured that the vessel was safely escorted to navigable waters. Following this mission, both tugs returned to their respective stations, while the 'Burak Bayraktar' continued its journey towards Bremen without further assistance.

Stricken Container Ship Burak Bayraktar Faces Crisis Near Vlieland

Dec 06, 2013 17:07

In the early hours of December 6, 2013, the container vessel "Burak Bayraktar" encountered significant troubles approximately five miles off the coast of Vlieland. Following a power loss and propulsion issues, the ship's crew of 17 reported to the Dutch Coast Guard after midnight, prompting immediate action. The vessel, which was making its way from Rotterdam to Bremen with a cargo of containers, was compelled to drop anchor just after the incident. To provide assistance, the tugboat "Ievoli Amaranth" was dispatched and arrived on the scene at 2:45 a.m. However, by 6:10 a.m., the situation had worsened as the "Burak Bayraktar" reported that its anchor was dragging, causing the vessel to drift dangerously close to the Eierlandsche ground. The captain, in a bid to stabilize the ship, requested the aid of the "Ievoli Amaranth", which struggled in vain to establish a towing connection. Another tug, the "Hunter", on standby from Terschelling, also faced challenges in rendering assistance. As the morning progressed, the "Burak Bayraktar" continued to drift past an underwater gas pipeline but managed to reach a somewhat stable position around 4.7 miles west of the Eierland lighthouse in Texel. With the "Ievoli Amaranth" returning to Den Helder, it was replaced by the tug "Ginger" from IJmuiden, while the "Hunter" remained in readiness. Due to the vessel's inability to continue toward Bremen under its own power, efforts were underway to establish a towing connection as soon as weather conditions allowed. Notably, the ship's cargo included hazardous materials, adding urgency to the situation.
