Fire Erupts on Bulk Carrier 'Burns Harbor' During Departure

Mar 27, 2019 12:42

On the morning of March 26, 2019, the bulk carrier 'Burns Harbor' experienced an alarming fire incident while departing towards Lake Michigan. The crew onboard detected the blaze at approximately 8:15 a.m. and swiftly acted, with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard and the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department. The fire, identified to be in the bow section of the vessel, was successfully extinguished, reportedly due to an electrical malfunction. In response to the emergency, a 29-foot Coast Guard vessel was deployed alongside four firefighters from Sturgeon Bay and multiple tugboats to provide support. Once the fire was conclusively doused, the decision was made to tow the 'Burns Harbor,' which was located just beyond the Bay View Bridge on the lake side, back to the Fincantieri/Bay Shipbuilding mooring area. The tugs carefully maneuvered the distressed ship through the city's three bridges and secured it at the designated mooring site shortly before noon. Following this incident, 'Burns Harbor' resumed its journey, departing from Sturgeon Bay at 03:20 a.m. on April 4.

Coast Guard Performs Critical MedEvac in Straits of Mackinac

Nov 24, 2013 13:12

On November 23, 2013, the U.S. Coast Guard initiated a life-saving medical evacuation in the Straits of Mackinac, rescuing a 37-year-old man aboard the vessel 'Burns Harbor.' At approximately 1 p.m., the captain of the Burns Harbor reached out to the Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, for urgent assistance due to the manโ€™s severe abdominal pain and a brief loss of consciousness lasting two minutes. Following a consultation with the on-duty flight surgeon, the Coast Guard directed the vessel to navigate towards St. Ignace, Michigan. There, they prepared for a crucial rendezvous with Coast Guard personnel. A dedicated rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Ignace, accompanied by an emergency medical technician, promptly launched into action and met the Burns Harbor one mile east of the station in Lake Huron. Upon arrival, the crew successfully transferred the patient to their rescue boat. The patient was then taken to the Coast Guard station, where he awaited further transportation to the Mackinac Straits Rural Health Clinic in St. Ignace for additional medical care.
