In a daring rescue operation, Air National Guardsmen from the 129th Rescue Wing successfully executed a complex medical evacuation for an injured crew member aboard the cargo ship "Carl Rickmers" approximately 300 miles off the Mexican coastline on November 29, 2012. The U.S. Coast Guard reached out to the 129th RQW on November 26, alerting them to the urgent situation involving a seaman who had sustained a significant head injury that was beyond the ship's medical capabilities. Given the vessel's isolated position in the Pacific Ocean and the urgent need for medical assistance, the 129th RQW mobilized for the task. An HH-60G Pave Hawk rescue helicopter, alongside a MC-130P Combat Shadow refueling aircraft, set off from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in the morning to reach the vessel in the Eastern Pacific. The Guardian Angel pararescuemen from the 129th RQW skillfully descended onto the vessel using a hoist system to prepare the injured man for retrieval. During the flight that lasted around two hours back to Mexico, medical treatment was administered to the patient aboard the helicopter. Upon landing in Cabo San Lucas, he was swiftly transferred onto the MC-130P and flew to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, situated near San Diego. From there, he was taken by ambulance to a hospital equipped with a level-four trauma care unit for further treatment.
