In a recent landmark decision, four seafarers from the coaster Danica White have lost their legal battle concerning piracy compensation. These sailors, who endured 83 harrowing days as hostages of Somali pirates in 2007, sought justice in the Østre Landsret court, aiming to claim damages from Rederiet H. Folmer, the vessel's owner. However, the court ruled against the seafarers, determining that the owner could not be held liable for the hijacking or the subsequent hostage ordeal. Tragically, one of the four crew members passed away earlier this year. The Danica White was captured by Somali pirates on June 1, 2007, and was only released on August 22 of the same year after a ransom was paid. This decision marks a significant moment in maritime law regarding the responsibility of vessel owners in piracy incidents.
