In a dramatic turn of events, Shane Freeman, a 61-year-old solo sailor from Australia, found himself in a perilous situation while participating in the Golden Globe Race, set to launch from England in just 17 months on June 16, 2018. Freeman was aboard his Tradewind 35 yacht, "Mushka," when he faced life-threatening challenges en route to England after attempting to sail around Cape Horn. Meanwhile, the Maritime Government of Punta Arenas collaborated with the B & M Shipping Agency and called for assistance from the bulk carrier, "Frontier Ambition," which was positioned 100 miles north of Freeman's yacht. After assessing the situation for several hours, Freeman realized he needed to abandon "Mushka." Fifteen hours after the initial distress call, he made the tough decision to leave his vessel behind, deliberately flooding it by severing a pipe. Upon boarding the bulk carrier, Freeman took a moment to observe the turbulent sea conditions and reflected that he had made the right choice by abandoning "Mushka." His rescue marked a successful operation to save the lone sailor, who had been at sea for 70 days following his departure from Melbourne on December 11, 2016, with the goal of reaching the Falklands.
