On June 29, 2025, at approximately 11 a.m., the tugboat 'Cala Gullo' (IMO: 9791509) met a tragic fate as it sank in the Port of Barcelona after colliding with the container ship 'Cape Sounio'. Fortunately, all three crew members aboard the tug were rescued without injury by port pilots using a pilot boat. The incident occurred while the 'Cala Gullo' was engaged in a turnaround maneuver alongside the container ship, which was departing from the Hutchison Port Best terminal. The tug began to list before ultimately sinking, with only its bow protruding above the water. Following the incident, the 'Cape Sounio' continued its journey and left the port on July 1, heading towards La Spezia with an estimated time of arrival on July 2. In response to the collision, the Maritime Interior Plan (PIM) was activated to evaluate the potential for an oil spill in the water; however, this risk was later dismissed. ZIM Integrated Shipping Services has officially introduced the CAPE SOUNIO, a remarkable 11,000 TEU container ship, to its Asia South America East Coast (ASE) trade. The vessel embarked on its inaugural journey from Pusan, South Korea, on May 4th, primarily serving ports in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina while establishing vital connections to prominent Asian ports. Crafted at the HHI shipyard in the Philippines, the CAPE SOUNIO was delivered in April 2017 and stands as ZIM's largest vessel operating within this trade route. Measuring an impressive 330 meters long and 48 meters wide, the ship boasts a nominal capacity of 11,037 TEUs, along with 1,453 reefer plugs onboard, catering to a diverse array of shipping needs. In celebration of this significant milestone, ZIM will host a special reception aboard the CAPE SOUNIO in Santos, Brazil, on June 28th.
