Swift Action Prevents Piracy Attempt in Gulf of Aden
On November 2, 2018, at approximately 12:40 p.m., the crew of the tanker 'Po Yang Hu' detected a potential piracy threat while navigating eastward in the Gulf of Aden. The ship's duty officer spotted a suspicious mother vessel accompanied by two skiffs, each manned by two individuals, approaching their position at coordinates 013 27 56N and 050 13 53E. Recognizing the danger, the officer promptly alerted the ship's master, who took immediate action to bolster the vessel's defenses. Security measures were swiftly implemented: deck water spray was activated, a security broadcast was made on VHF Ch16, and three armed guards were stationed on the bridge. Additionally, the master initiated a lock-down procedure and communicated the incident details to the company's chief security officer and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). As the tanker executed anti-piracy maneuvers and increased its speed, the assailants were forced to abandon their pursuit, ensuring the safety of all onboard.
