Tanker Azurite Experiences Engine Troubles on the Wester Scheldt

Dec 13, 2019 10:46

On December 12, 2019, the oil tanker 'Azurite', carrying a load from the Sea-Tank Terminal in Antwerp towards the North Sea, encountered serious engine failure while navigating the Wester Scheldt near Zeeland-Flemish Eendragtpolder. The incident occurred in the early afternoon, prompting concerns as the vessel drifted over a buoy and was at risk of running aground. In response, a comprehensive rescue operation was launched, involving five tugs: 'Multratug 17', 'Multratug 19', 'Multratug 13', 'Multratug 1', and 'Multratug 9', which arrived promptly on the scene. The tugs successfully secured the Azurite and towed it to the Put of Terneuzen, where it was anchored outside the active shipping fairway for critical repairs. During this operation, three tugs remained on standby to ensure the safety of the vessel. By 4 PM that same day, repairs were completed, enabling the Azurite to resume its journey, albeit with two tugs on standby until it reached the Flushing roads. By December 18, the tanker left North Sea waters, heading toward the Atlantic with Lagos as its final destination, expecting to arrive by December 30.
