Capesize Vessel Captain Vangelis L Grounds in Sepetiba Bay, Swiftly Rescued

Aug 21, 2015 09:13

On the morning of August 19, the Capesize bulk carrier Captain Vangelis L encountered difficulties as it ran aground in the anchorage area of Sepetiba Bay, located off Itaguai in Rio de Janeiro. The incident was attributed to the anchor dragging amid strong winds, causing the vessel to drift into shallower waters. Fortunately, with the assistance of the high tide on the morning of August 20, the Captain Vangelis L was successfully refloated and subsequently towed to a safe anchorage point for an underwater inspection. Fortunately, no damages have been reported following the incident. The bulk carrier had recently arrived in Itaguai after departing from Mundra, India.

Freighter Collision in Busan Leads to Significant Oil Spill

Feb 15, 2014 20:54

On February 15, 2014, a collision occurred involving the bulk carrier 'Captain Vangelis L' and a tanker in the waters off Busan at approximately 2:20 p.m. The bulker, which had just arrived from Qinhuangdao, was maneuvering near the port when the incident unfolded. The tanker was attempting to dock alongside the freighter to offload 1,500 tons of oil when the collision happened. As a result, a substantial hole measuring 20x30 centimeters was inflicted on the port side of the tanker, leading to a major oil leak. Emergency response teams swiftly cordoned off the area with containment booms, but an oil slick stretching about 800 meters was soon visible on the water's surface. Following three hours of intensive clean-up efforts by five Coast Guard cutters and two naval vessels, responders faced challenges due to rough seas, which hindered their ability to manage the spill effectively. Additionally, a second oil slick approximately 200 meters wide was reported drifting northeast from the site. The Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries has established a special task force to manage the containment operations, while local authorities were urged to implement necessary actions to mitigate environmental impacts.
