On the morning of August 19, the Capesize bulk carrier Captain Vangelis L encountered difficulties as it ran aground in the anchorage area of Sepetiba Bay, located off Itaguai in Rio de Janeiro. The incident was attributed to the anchor dragging amid strong winds, causing the vessel to drift into shallower waters. Fortunately, with the assistance of the high tide on the morning of August 20, the Captain Vangelis L was successfully refloated and subsequently towed to a safe anchorage point for an underwater inspection. Additionally, a second oil slick approximately 200 meters wide was reported drifting northeast from the site. The Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries has established a special task force to manage the containment operations, while local authorities were urged to implement necessary actions to mitigate environmental impacts.
