Tanker Comes to Rescue: French Sailor Receives Critical Fuel After Dismasting

Dec 29, 2016 22:14

In a dramatic turn of events, French sailor Stephane Le Diraison, who is currently competing in the Vendee Globe non-stop solo race, faced a significant setback when his yacht 'Sinbad' was dismasted in the treacherous waters of the Southern Ocean on December 17, 2016. Despite the unfortunate incident, Le Diraison remained unharmed and swiftly crafted an improvised rig to keep his 60-foot vessel moving towards Melbourne, located over 950 nautical miles away. As he continued his journey, Le Diraison encountered strong northerly winds that threatened to push him further off course, away from the Australian coast. However, hope arrived on December 24 when he was able to make contact with the tanker 'Captain J. Neofotistos' off the coast of Victoria. In a remarkable act of maritime camaraderie, the crew aboard the tanker provided Le Diraison with an essential 200 liters of fuel, enabling him to navigate his way back to safety. Due to the size difference between the two vessels, the fuel was carefully transferred via a rope line to avoid any mishaps. With this lifeline secured, Le Diraison's efforts to return to Melbourne became more feasible. He is anticipated to arrive on December 30, 2016, where 'Sinbad' will be loaded onto a freighter for its return journey to France.
