Hapag-Lloyd Unveils Second 10,500 TEU Containership, Cartagena Express

Jan 24, 2017 06:43

Hapag-Lloyd, the prominent German shipping line, has officially named its second 10,500 TEU containership, the Cartagena Express, during a ceremony held at the Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries shipyard in Samho, South Korea, on January 23, 2017. This new vessel is set to enhance the company's SW service, which offers weekly maritime routes connecting North Europe with the Caribbean and the West Coast of South America. The Cartagena Express is the third vessel in Hapag-Lloyd's Post-Panamax series, following the Valparaíso Express and the Callao Express. Anthony J. Firmin, the Chief Operating Officer at Hapag-Lloyd, expressed enthusiasm for the new addition, noting, "With the Cartagena Express, yet another state-of-the-art ship of our 10,500 TEU fleet is setting sail. In terms of size, design, and reefer capacity, it is ideally suited for the traffic between Europe and South America West Coast." Measuring an impressive 333 meters in length and 48 meters in width, the Cartagena Express will make key stops at various ports throughout its service, including Rotterdam (Netherlands), London (UK), Hamburg (Germany), Antwerp (Belgium), Le Havre (France), and multiple destinations in the Caribbean and South America such as Caucedo (Dominican Republic), Cartagena (Colombia), and Callao (Peru). All vessels in this class are classified by DNV GL and will operate under the German flag. Notably, these containerships boast a total capacity of 10,593 TEU, which includes 2,100 plugs dedicated for temperature-controlled reefer containers, making them exceptionally equipped for global trade needs.
