On the evening of January 29, 2024, the pipe-laying vessel 'Castorone' encountered a critical incident while attempting to install a pipeline off the coast of Pilbara, leading to an immediate evacuation of personnel on board. The mishap resulted in damage to the pipeline and halted operations for offshore workers for nearly a month as repairs were initiated. Following the incident, approximately 200 construction workers were demobilized and informed that their services would no longer be required during this downtime. This critical situation also affected the timing for the next rotation of offshore personnel. Saipem, the company operating the Castorone, conducted an initial investigation which indicated that a software malfunction led to the incident, causing significant buckling of the pipeline during installation and compromising a segment of the pre-installed Scarborough pipeline. Thankfully, the vessel itself escaped any structural damage. However, a failure of a tensioner—a device designed to hold up to 250 tonnes of pipeline between the vessel and the ocean floor—was identified as a key factor in the incident. An underwater camera investigation subsequently confirmed a rupture in the pipeline, allowing seawater to infiltrate the damaged section.

Late last week, the ambitious project to lay Norway's largest oil pipeline commenced just outside Mongstad, situated to the north of Bergen. The operation is being executed by the specialized vessel Saipem Castorone. As part of this significant endeavor, the initial segment of the 36-inch pipeline, destined to become Norway’s longest oil transport conduit, is set to be drawn into the Mongstad terminal. This extensive pipeline, measuring over 280 km, will connect to the Johan Sverdrup field. The process involves carefully pulling the pipeline through a pre-drilled passage at the bottom of Fensfjord directly into the oil terminal. Once fully operational, the Johan Sverdrup field is expected to deliver an impressive peak production of up to 660,000 barrels of oil per day into Mongstad.

Statoil has made a significant investment, awarding contracts valued at approximately NOK 2.5 billion, equivalent to US$288 million, for its Johan Sverdrup offshore oil and gas project. The renowned Italian contractor Saipem has secured the critical contract for pipeline installation, utilizing its impressive Castorone pipelay vessel for the task. Notably, the Castorone recently accomplished the remarkable feat of installing the Ichthys subsea pipeline off the coast of Australia for INPEX, which spans an astounding 42 inches in diameter and stretches a remarkable 553 miles (890 km) under the sea.
