Maintenance Barge of Catalina Express Partially Sinks in Long Beach
On October 22, 2014, at approximately 11:30 PM, a 110-foot maintenance barge utilized as a fueling station for the Catalina Express service—connecting Long Beach and Santa Catalina Island—partially sank at its berth in Long Beach due to water ingress. Local emergency teams swiftly acted to halt the flow of diesel fuel to the vessel, preventing any pollution incidents. Quick measures included placing containment booms around the barge to manage potential spills. Salvage crews have been enlisted to refloat and stabilize the barge, while divers conduct inspections of the hull to identify any leaks, with preliminary investigations indicating the source may be near the front of the barge. Fortunately, the incident did not disrupt operations for the Catalina Express, which maintained its schedule with the first departure on October 23, 2014, as planned.
