Brest Welcomes Repairs for the Stricken 'Cathy Jo'

On the morning of May 13, a technician from the Dutch firm Wagenborg arrived in Brest to assess the spare parts required for the repair of the cargo vessel 'Cathy Jo'. The repairs, which were necessitated by a leak in the injection system that ignited a fire and damaged the turbine of the Mak engine rated at 2,640 kW, are expected to take several days to complete. This incident occurred while the ship was navigating through the Ouessant TSS, located 150 km west of Penmarc'h. Fortunately, the 'Cathy Jo' crew successfully managed to extinguish the fire. The tug 'Abeille Bourbon' provided assistance by towing the 'Cathy Jo' to safety, docking at 4:45 p.m. Following the repairs, the vessel departed from Brest on June 2 at 1:15 p.m., resuming its journey to Szczecin. The crew of eight faced a critical situation as the vessel experienced engine failure due to the blaze. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Corsen acted quickly, dispatching two technicians and a team of six firefighters via a helicopter from the naval base in Brest. On January 8, 2015, the bulk carrier 'Cathy Jo' found itself aground approximately 350 meters off the coast of Stevns. The incident occurred shortly after the vessel set sail from Stevns Pier that morning. Struck by strong winds and suffering a loss of power, 'Cathy Jo' was pushed ashore. Initial attempts to refloat the vessel on the same day were unsuccessful. However, on January 9, with the assistance of the tug 'Sea Alfa' and aided by an unusually high tide, the bulk carrier was successfully refloated. Following the incident, 'Cathy Jo' anchored off Køge where it was assessed for damage by divers, having been escorted by Danish naval ships. The vessel is now scheduled to continue its journey to Kemi, with an expected time of arrival on January 13.
