Italian Tug Asso Ventidue Escapes Libyan Military, Seeks NATO Assistance
On Friday evening, the Italian tugboat Asso Ventidue, also known as Asso 22, successfully evaded capture by Libyan military forces and made its way into international waters. According to reports from ANSA news agency, the tugboat established radio communication with a NATO warship patrolling off the coast of Libya. The Italian warship is now on its way to intercept the Asso 22, with plans to reach the vessel by early Saturday morning. Details surrounding the escape remain unclear. The Asso 22 was originally detained in Tripoli last month, coinciding with the start of airstrikes by an international coalition that included Italy. At the time of the incident, the vessel was carrying 11 crew members—eight of whom were Italian nationals—when armed forces boarded the ship as it arrived to transport workers for the Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC). Since the seizure, diplomatic negotiations have intensified, with Italy stating that the crew members were being treated as "hostages." The developments surrounding the Asso Ventidue highlight ongoing tensions in the region and the critical role of international maritime security.
