Tragic Incident on 'Cetus Narwhal': Crew Member Dies After Fall into Cargo Hold

Jan 28, 2026 12:13

A tragic incident occurred on January 27, 2026, as the 'Cetus Narwhal' was operating approximately 30 nautical miles off the coast of Buenaventura, Colombia. A boatswain onboard fell into the cargo hold, prompting the Colombian Maritime Authority (DIMAR) to swiftly launch search and rescue operations. Notifications were made to DIMAR by the Maritime Traffic Control and Surveillance Station at the Buenaventura Port Authority, triggering an immediate response. Coordinating efforts with the Pacific Naval Force, DIMAR dispatched a Coast Guard Rapid Reaction Unit to manage the emergency despite adverse weather conditions complicating maritime evacuation efforts. Subsequently, air support was requested from the Pacific Naval Air Group, leading to the crew member being airlifted from about 15 nautical miles east of the Buenaventura sea buoy. He was taken to the 2nd Marine Infantry Brigade in Buenaventura before being transported to a local medical facility, where he was pronounced dead. In the wake of the incident, the 'Cetus Narwhal' returned to anchor at the port of Buenaventura, where DIMAR initiated necessary procedures to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic fall. The General Maritime Directorate has commenced a legal inquiry to establish the specifics of the incident, including timing, location, and potential liabilities. As of January 28, the vessel remained anchored at coordinates 03Β° 49' N 077Β° 11' W, having departed from Buenaventura on January 24.
