Alder Completes Historic High-Seas Boardings in Peru Under New SPRFMO Initiative

Nov 30, 2023 09:57

On November 29, 2023, the 'Alder', based in San Francisco, returned to its home port after successfully executing its inaugural high-seas boardings and inspections in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This mission was part of a newly implemented conservation and management measure aimed at overseeing fishing and supply vessel operations at sea within the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO) Convention Area. The crew of the 'Alder' ventured south of the equator to carry out SPRFMO inspections, engaging in both boardings and aerial overflights over the high seas off the coast of Peru. This mission was particularly noteworthy as it coincided with the rollout of recently adopted regulations within the SPRFMO Convention Area, which represents nearly 25% of the world's high seas. The SPRFMO Commission consists of 17 member nations from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania, along with two cooperative non-contracting parties. In addition to its inspection duties, the 'Alder' undertook counter-narcotics operations and provided training for two crew members on drone missions launched from the cutter. To enhance operational capacity, the vessel operated with four small boats throughout the patrol. While docked in Paita and Lima, Peru, the 'Alder' hosted various high-ranking officials, highlighting the significance of the mission. The cutter also participated in GALAPEX 2023, a multi-national exercise coordinated by Ecuador near the Galapagos Islands. This dynamic training involved communications drills, counter-narcotics boarding simulations, and the participation of observers from Peru, Ecuador, and Brazil. The exercise concluded with extensive drills targeting coordinated international responses to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Following this collaborative effort, the 'Alder' redirected its focus towards high-seas boarding inspections along the Peruvian coastline.
