Floating Incident: Maersk Sheerness Collides with Chacabuco in Livorno

Jan 25, 2019 19:40

On January 24, 2019, a maritime mishap unfolded at Livorno's port when the container vessel "Maersk Sheerness" became untethered from its mooring at Lucca Quay due to strong easterly winds gusting at 35 knots. The powerful gusts caused the ship to break free, dislodging a bollard, and the vessel drifted across the harbor, ultimately colliding with the berthed container ship "Chacabuco" at Massa Quay. Although "Maersk Sheerness" secured its position with the assistance of three tugboats, it broke loose again, this time tearing out another bollard at the bow. Thankfully, as the wind subsided, the crew was able to resecure the vessel at its berth by 3:20 PM. The next day, January 25, at 9 AM, "Maersk Sheerness" set sail towards Genova, with an estimated evening arrival. Concurrently, the "Chacabuco" commenced its journey from Livorno to Genova at 7:30 AM, reaching its destination at 1:40 PM.
