BW Tankers Limited Expands Fleet with Acquisition of 'Stream Mia' and Nine Additional Chemical Tankers

May 21, 2014 13:12

In a strategic move to enhance its fleet, BW Tankers Limited has officially entered into a sales agreement with Stream Tankers AS, acquiring ten chemical tankers. This notable transaction includes the M/T Stream Mia, which boasts a deadweight tonnage of 19,702 dwt and was built in 2008 at Fukuoka, along with the M/T Stream Luna, built in 2010 at Shitanoe and measuring 19,999 dwt. The acquisition, as detailed in BW's recent press release, also encompasses eight newbuilding contracts with Fukuoka Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. and Shitanoe Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. These contracts involve the construction of eight state-of-the-art chemical tankers, each with a capacity of 19,900 dwt and equipped with stainless steel cargo tanks designed with an innovative eco-design hull. Set to be delivered between 2015 and 2018, these vessels are expected to be powered by modern, efficient engines, resulting in significant fuel reductions. Stream Tankers AS, the selling entity, is a key player in the shipping sector, owned by Utkilen AS (60%), EGD Shipholding AS (35%), and BSCO AS (5%). Utkilen AS, established in 1916 and headquartered in Bergen, Norway, operates a fleet of 22 chemical tankers ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 dwt, and is recognized as one of Northern Europe's leading companies in the transportation of chemicals and bulk liquid cargoes. EGD Shipholding AS, a prominent investment company founded in 1907, focuses primarily on shipping and real estate, while BSCO AS is owned by Mr. Bjørn Sjaastad, the Chairman of both Stream Tankers AS and Utkilen AS.
