What Crew Members Say About Chipol-Donghai

On October 8, 2025, the United States Coast Guard successfully carried out a medical evacuation (medevac) of a 44-year-old captain from the cargo ship 'Chipol Donghai,' located 57 miles off the coast of Oahu. The vessel was making its way from Qidong to Andamos, with an expected arrival date of October 30. The medical emergency was reported on October 5 at approximately 11 p.m., when the ship's crew reached out to the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in Honolulu. At the time, the 'Chipol Donghai' was about 1,500 miles north of Oahu. Coast Guard watchstanders at the JRCC initiated continuous communication with the crew to keep track of the captain's deteriorating health. As the situation became more critical, the JRCC consulted with the on-duty flight surgeon, who promptly advised that a medevac was necessary. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point was dispatched for the operation. At 8:53 p.m., the helicopter crew efficiently hoisted the captain and transported him in stable condition to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for further medical attention.
