Engine Room Blaze on Chiquita Voyager at Port of Wilmington
On November 26, 2025, at 9:28 a.m., firefighters responded to a significant fire incident on the 'Chiquita Voyager' docked at the Port of Wilmington, Philadelphia. The fire erupted in the engine room shortly after the vessel arrived from Puerto Cortes, producing thick smoke that was visible from the ship's superstructure and prompting a rapid, coordinated response from multiple agencies. Firefighters quickly boarded the ship to initiate suppression efforts and worked to evacuate crew members effectively. The blaze was confined to the engine room, partially thanks to the vessel's onboard suppression system, which played a crucial role in containing the flames to the area of origin. Emergency crews conducted suppression tactics across several decks, utilizing water supply from the pier while Coast Guard teams provided additional support from the water. Approximately around 10:00 a.m., the ship's master, in conjunction with responders, made the strategic decision to evacuate the engine room and deploy CO2 flooding to extinguish the fire. Fortunately, all crew members were accounted for before the CO2 release. Firefighting teams worked diligently for about three hours to get the fire under control; however, fire units continued to monitor the scene for any signs of flare-ups throughout the day. During the incident, four crew members sustained injuries and were promptly transported to Christiana Hospital by Emergency Medical Services for evaluation and treatment, with details regarding their injuries not disclosed immediately. In total, the operation involved approximately 70 firefighters and emergency medical personnel from various agencies, including units from the Wilmington Fire Department, New Castle County EMS, New Castle County Emergency Management, and mutual aid from several nearby fire departments. This large-scale response underscores the collaborative efforts of emergency services in ensuring maritime safety in Wilmington.
