On October 23, 2018, an incident unfolded on the Oude Maas when two pushed barges detached from the 'Christiane Deymann 1' in the afternoon. The mishap occurred as the coupling navigated a bend near Puttershoek and subsequently ran aground on a crib situated upstream of the former sugar factory. On July 12, the lightering process for the 'Christiane Deymann 1' encountered unexpected delays due to significant gravel accumulation around the grounded vessel. Crews had to first remove approximately 400 tons of gravel that had collected as a result of the master’s unsuccessful attempts to refloat the ship. It wasn't until 2:30 p.m. that the first steel coil could be extracted from the hold. In total, around 600 tons of cargo were successfully lightered, which eventually allowed the disabled vessel to be refloated. Following this, the 'Christiane Deymann 1' was towed to Diehl port for necessary surveys. The previous evening, during salvage operations, a wire became entangled in its propeller, complicating the situation further. Salvage operations for the vessels "Christiane Deymann 1" (IMO: 02324750; MMSI: 244690214; CS: PD4463) and "Christiane Deymann 2" (ENI: 02323261) are making headway. On the evening of July 11, 2023, the "Christiane Deymann 2" was successfully refloated after lightering operations were carried out by the tugboat "Doris". Following this, it was towed to Diehl port by the pusher tug "Marshal". The lightering process for the steel coils aboard the "Christiane Deymann 1" was completed on July 12, and the vessel was then scheduled to follow into the port for inspection and potential reloading, provided no substantial damage was found. Meanwhile, navigation on the Rhine River has resumed with caution and a recommended reduced speed for passing traffic. The Colonia fire brigade remains on standby to address any unforeseen issues during the salvage process. The incident occurred on July 10 at around 11:30 a.m. when both barges became stuck while en route from Kehl to Mülheim/Ruhr. They deviated from the fairway to allow another barge to pass, resulting in the "Christiane Deymann 2" being lifted approximately 20 centimeters off the riverbed.
