On February 2, 2020, at 3:15 PM, the vessel 'Ceres' experienced a critical engine failure while navigating the Kiel Canal eastbound, en route from Hamburg to Kaliningrad. The incident occurred near canal kilometer 51, close to Breiholz, when smoke began to develop from the ship’s machinery. Promptly, the crew executed an emergency anchoring maneuver which unfortunately resulted in contact with the southern embankment of the canal, as reported by the pilot on board. To provide assistance, the SFK tug 'Stein' (IMO: 9241243) was dispatched from Kiel. Later in the afternoon, as the tug arrived, the 'Ceres' began its escorted transit towards Kiel at around 5:00 PM, reaching its destination at the Scheer Oirt by 8:15 PM. Investigations revealed that an overheated wave generator was to blame for the incident. After thorough inspections, the vessel was cleared to continue its journey in the early hours of February 3, departing at 1:20 AM and successfully docking at Baltiysk Port by 4:00 AM on February 4.
