Nov 21, 2022 11:01

On November 19, 2022, the bulk carrier 'Christina B,' navigating from Istanbul to Tarragona, played a crucial role in a search and rescue (SAR) operation led by the Italian Coast Guard. This mission unfolded under challenging maritime conditions as rescuers responded to a distress call regarding a fishing vessel carrying 500 migrants approximately 70 miles off Sicily's coastline. Responding swiftly, several Italian Coast Guard vessels were deployed to assist the migrants, successfully transferring them to the safety of port facilities in Pozzallo. Notably, the 'Christina B' also rescued six men and one woman, bringing them ashore. Tragically, four lifeless bodies were recovered from the sea, while two individuals remained unaccounted for. The rescue efforts were coordinated by the Algerian authorities, located 170 miles from Algeria's coast, who requested assistance from their Italian counterparts to manage the delicate situation involving the migrants and the deceased.
