Collision Incident Involving Tanker and Barge Near Haifa Port
On the evening of February 4, 2018, a maritime incident unfolded when the tanker 'Chrysopigi,' laden with 30,000 tonnes of fuel products, struck the barge 'Rising Sun Ihi' as it was making its way into Haifa port. The collision occurred at approximately 7 p.m., leading to significant complications for the barge, which subsequently lost its steering capabilities. At the time of the accident, the 'Rising Sun Ihi' was actively involved in the construction of an extension for the port's breakwater. As a result of the impact, the starboard quarter kedge anchor of the barge was dislodged, causing it to drift perilously onto the breakwater. The collision inflicted notable damage to the starboard side shell plating, along with inward dents affecting the watertight compartments on the port side and the port shuttle. Responding promptly, the barge's owners deployed their own tugs for assistance in managing the situation. Fortunately, the 'Rising Sun Ihi' was successfully refloated by February 10, with no reports of water ingress. Plans were subsequently made to tow the vessel to a dry dock in Turkey for further inspection and repairs.
