In a harrowing incident on the night of June 5, 2026, at approximately 12:45 a.m., two cargo vessels, the 'Natra' and 'Zirkon', were struck by drone attacks while navigating in ballast toward Rostov-on-Don for grain loading in the Taganrog Bay of the Sea of Azov. The Taman Sea Rescue and Coordination Center has confirmed that five seafarers lost their lives in this distressing event. The 'Natra', which was on its way from Bartin with 12 crew members aboard, suffered four drone strikes that tragically resulted in the deaths of both the captain and the chief officer. A fire ignited on board, but the crew managed to extinguish it. Nevertheless, the vessel sustained significant damage and required towing support, prompting the dispatch of two tugboats to the site. Simultaneously, at around 1:55 a.m., the Palau-flagged 'Zirkon', with 14 crew members, was attacked, sustaining four hits on its superstructure. This assault ended in the loss of three crew members' lives. The surviving team quickly abandoned the burning vessel in lifeboats, and fortunately, they were rescued by three nearby ships and taken to the port of Yeysk.
