On January 25, 2021, at approximately 3:00 PM, a serious workplace accident occurred at the Valessini gate in the Varco Valessini area of Livorno, Italy. A port worker, engaged in operations within a hold measuring 15 to 18 meters deep, was struck by a large bale that fell from a height of about ten meters. Emergency responders, including a specialized team from the power station and the Speleo Alpino Fluviale (SAF), rushed to the incident site. Due to adverse weather conditions, particularly strong winds, it proved impossible to hoist the injured worker onto the deck. Initial recovery efforts using a crane stationed at the quay, followed by another attempt with a fire engine ladder, were unsuccessful. By 4:30 PM, the Search and Rescue (SAR) team utilized ropes and a stretcher to descend into the hold to reach the injured man. After a challenging retrieval operation, the worker was safely hoisted around 6:00 PM and subsequently attended to by a 118 emergency doctor, who had been present to manage the thoracic and abdominal injuries sustained. Personnel from the harbour master's office, state police, and Usl port authority were also on-site to support the recovery efforts.
