Major Drug Bust in Melilla: 86 Kg of Hashish Seized from Vehicle

Nov 21, 2019 12:06

On November 20, 2019, authorities in Melilla arrested a Moroccan man holding a Residence Card in Spain as he prepared to board the ferry 'Ciudad de Granada'. This incident occurred amid a crackdown on drug trafficking at the Commercial Port of Melilla. During routine vehicle inspections prior to the ship's departure to Almeria, the Dock Section Registration Team conducted a thorough check of a Peugeot 3008, which was being driven by a solitary occupant. Upon initial inspection, officers noted suspicious details that warranted a more extensive examination, particularly in the fuel tank area. Following a meticulous search, agents discovered an ingeniously constructed double bottom within the tank and other compartments, including the lower front and rear wings of the vehicle. In total, law enforcement uncovered 147 packages of various shapes and sizes, filled with a greenish substance later identified as hashish pollen, recognized for its high concentration of cannabis's active ingredient. The combined weight of the seized drugs amounted to an impressive 86,700 grams. The detained driver, a 36-year-old Moroccan national, is currently residing in the city under a community residence permit. This successful operation underscores the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.
