On the evening of May 4, 2019, a fire erupted in cargo holds 1 and 2 of the vessel 'Yuan An Hai,' which was navigating from Skikda to Southampton. Responding quickly to the incident, the crew sealed hold 2 with a hatch to suffocate the flames by cutting off the oxygen supply. Hampshire Fire and Rescue teams promptly arrived at the scene to assist. Fortunately, no environmental pollution was reported during this incident. Venting operations began at 5:40 a.m. the following day and were completed by 6:10 a.m. By 10 a.m. on May 5, temperatures within the cargo holds had stabilized to normal levels, allowing for a planned cargo offloading to take place at noon. A P&I inspector was present onboard to evaluate the situation. Preliminary investigations suggest that a vehicle battery may have been the ignition source of the fire.
