Incident in Kiel Canal Involves Tanker 'Clearocean Marvel'
On March 24, 2020, the 'Clearocean Marvel' experienced significant challenges while traversing the Kiel Canal. This eastbound tanker was en route from Hamburg to Ust-Luga when it encountered an obstruction caused by a high voltage cable that had been suspended over the waterway near Schülp, which led to a traffic jam with numerous vessels queuing around the construction area. As traffic resumed at 4:30 p.m., the 'Clearocean Marvel' struggled to gain adequate speed due to the strong southeastern winds, resulting in the vessel being pushed against the pilings. To assist, the tug 'Holtenau' was dispatched from Kiel. Although it successfully maneuvered the tanker back into the fairway, attempts to advance again saw the ship being forced toward the embankment. Consequently, the canal was closed to other ship traffic for an additional hour. Eventually, the vessel was able to resume its journey, arriving in Kiel at 8:15 p.m. After exiting the locks around 10 p.m., the 'Clearocean Marvel' continued its voyage to Ust-Luga, expected to arrive by March 26.
