International Container Ships Begin Gradual Return to Iran Post-Nuclear Agreement
In a significant development following the nuclear agreement between Tehran and global powers, Iran has welcomed its first international container ships this week. However, many shipping companies remain cautious about fully resuming operations until the remaining sanctions are lifted, a process that could take several months. A notable indication of this shift is the announcement from CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container shipping company based in France, which confirmed plans to reinstate services to Iran starting in early August. The CMA CGM Andromeda, flagged under the UK, made its docking at Iran's Bandar Abbas port on Thursday, as confirmed by ship tracking data. While CMA CGM chose not to provide further comments, Taiwanese shipping giant Evergreen, ranked fifth globally, also announced a resumption of calls to Bandar Abbas, with its first vessel arriving on Wednesday.
CMA CGM to Make Historic Call at Shahid Rajaei Port in Iran
In an exciting development for maritime trade, the French shipping giant CMA CGM has selected Shahid Rajaei Port in southern Iran as a key stop for its container vessels. Ebrahim Idani, the director general of Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Department, shared this news with reporters on Wednesday. This strategic move follows a recent agreement between Iran and the P5+1 nations regarding Tehran's civilian nuclear program, finalized in Vienna last week. The outcome of this agreement has led to the removal of economic and financial sanctions against Iran, as endorsed by a Security Council resolution adopted on Monday. This lift includes bans on Iran's Central Bank, shipping sectors, oil industry, and various other companies. Idani highlighted that CMA CGM ranks as the world's third-largest shipping company, specializing in container transport. The company’s first container ship to dock in Shahid Rajaei port is scheduled for early August. The vessel, named CMA CGM Andromeda, boasts an impressive length of 363 meters and a draft of 15.5 meters, with a capacity to carry 11,500 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). The Andromeda commenced its journey from the Far East and is on its way to the Persian Gulf, having designated 10 major ports for berthing along its route. Idani noted that the international standards of Shahid Rajaei port made it an ideal choice for the ship's call. He attributed the port's capacity to accommodate large vessels to significant investments made in its development over recent years. Situated 23 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas, the provincial capital of Hormozgan, Shahid Rajaei port stands as Iran's largest and most modern container port, featuring 18 gantry cranes and 41 docks, enhancing its capability to handle substantial maritime operations.
