The 'Sirus', carrying three individuals, had reportedly sustained serious damage to both its sails and its steering mechanisms, leaving the crew in a precarious situation. Around 7:10 p.m., the crew aboard the 'Sirus' successfully reached out to the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco on VHF channel 16 for assistance, indicating their dire circumstances and a minor head injury to one of the members aboard. The yacht had been at sea for an arduous 13 days during its journey from Coos Bay, Oregon, to San Diego, with supplies of food and water running critically low. Responding promptly, the Coast Guard broadcasted an urgent marine-information notice, which prompted a spontaneous response from fellow mariners ready to assist. Notably, the crew of the luxury vessel 'Seanna', located about 30 miles away, altered course to provide support, followed by the 195-foot tanker 'Polar Enterprise' which was around 75 miles distant. The 'CMA CGM Aquila' provided immediate supplies of food and water to the stranded 'Sirus', remaining on-site until the 'Seanna' arrived at approximately 11:45 p.m. The 'Seanna' further aided the situation by transferring a VHF radio and flares to the 'Sirus'. Subsequently, the 'Polar Enterprise' arrived early on September 5 at around 2:35 a.m., and together they remained until the Coast Guard Cutter 'Tern', stationed in San Francisco, took over at 3:05 p.m., initiating a stern tow towards Bodega Bay. During this transit, the 'Tern' reported hazardous sea conditions and was advised by Coast Guard watchstanders to reroute towards San Francisco Bay for safer passage. Eventually, the 'Tern' met a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Golden Gate near the Golden Gate Bridge and completed the tow around 8:00 a.m. on September 6, successfully mooring the 'Sirus' at Pier 45 in Sausalito by 8:45 a.m. This collaborative rescue effort showcases the commitment and resourcefulness of both the Coast Guard and fellow mariners in ensuring the safety of those in distress at sea.
