A significant maritime incident occurred on May 11, 2025, when the 'CMA CGM Ermitage' collided with the wall of the Athabaska Quay in Hamburg at approximately midday. The container ship, which was traveling from Bremerhaven, reportedly attempted to avoid a collision with a nearby motor yacht. At the time of the allision, a river pilot was on board alongside an assisting tug. The 'CMA CGM Ermitage' had previously docked at the Tollerort container port on May 10 for a container exchange. After departing, the vessel was navigating the short distance of about 200 meters to the Athabaska Quay when the accident transpired. Damage was significant, affecting both the quay wall and an adjacent container gantry crane that was dislodged from its tracks. Additional damage was inflicted on the bow and bridge of the 'CMA CGM Ermitage,' including a broken bridge window. Fortunately, the crew was able to secure the ship alongside the pier with no reported injuries, and the yacht involved in the near-collision remained undamaged. In the aftermath, port authorities initiated a damage assessment and launched an investigation into the occurrence. They are currently analyzing data acquired from radar systems, radio communications, and the AIS to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident. As of May 14, 'CMA CGM Ermitage' has been detained and is currently stationed at the Southwest Port near Afrikahöft while investigations continue.
