Hanjin Ningbo and Fortuna 98 Collide in Quanzhou Bay Incident

Jun 05, 2014 09:46

On May 30, 2014, a maritime mishap occurred in Quanzhou Bay, located in the Taiwan Strait approximately 20 miles southeast of Xingzhi, involving the container ship 'Hanjin Ningbo' and the general cargo vessel 'Fortuna 98'. The 'Hanjin Ningbo', on its route from Cat Lai Container Terminal in Ho Chi Minh City to Kwangyang, collided with the 'Fortuna 98', which was navigating from Lianyungang to Zhuhai. The impact struck the port side bow of the 'Fortuna 98', leading to a significant breach that allowed water to enter the ballast water tank and caused the ship to lose power. The seven crew members aboard 'Fortuna 98' promptly abandoned ship and were successfully rescued by the 20 crew members on the 'Hanjin Ningbo'. Visibility was reported at one mile during the incident, prompting the Quanzhou Maritime Bureau to activate an emergency response plan and dispatch the 'East China Sea Rescue 113'. To prevent the 'Fortuna 98' from sinking, the vessels remained attached. By 9 p.m. on May 31, the 'Fortuna 98' was stabilized and towed to Shek Wu port. Plans were in place to transport the damaged vessel to Yue Yun shipyard in Shi Shi City on June 1. As of June 4, the 'Hanjin Ningbo' was anchored off Quanzhou Bay, awaiting inquiries into the maritime accident.
