Emergency Medical Evacuation Near Cherbourg: CMA CGM Otello Crew Member Rescued
On January 14, 2020, at 7:04 p.m., a swift response unfolded when the CROSS Jobourg received an alert from the Maritime Medical Consultation Center (CCMM) in Toulouse regarding an injured crew member on board the CMA CGM Otello. The individual, a 24-year-old man, suffered an eye injury, prompting urgent medical assistance. Following consultations with both the CCMM in Toulouse and the Maritime Medical Coordination Service (SCMM) in Le Havre, the decision for a medical evacuation was made promptly. In response, a Caïman helicopter was dispatched from the French Navy base at Maupertus to the vessel, which was positioned 51 miles off the coast of Cherbourg, within the Casquets traffic separation scheme. At 8:05 p.m., the crew member was successfully hoisted onto the helicopter and subsequently flown to Caen-Carpiquet airport. Upon arrival at 9:13 p.m., he was met by an ambulance that transported him to the University Hospital of Caen for further treatment. This timely evacuation highlights the crucial role of maritime rescue operations in ensuring the safety and health of seafarers at sea.
CMA CGM Otello Saves 11 Indian Sailors from Sinking Vessel Off Kerala Coast
In a dramatic maritime rescue operation, the French container ship CMA CGM Otello came to the aid of 11 sailors from an Indian cargo vessel that sank approximately 40 kilometers from the coast of Vizhinjam on Saturday morning. The incident unfolded around 6:50 a.m. when the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai received an urgent communication from the captain of CMA CGM Otello. He reported that he had located a capsized wooden fishing boat with the 11 sailors, identified as fishermen, drifting 90 nautical miles west of Thiruvananthapuram. Responding swiftly to the MRCC's call for assistance, CMA CGM Otello successfully rescued the stranded sailors. The unfortunate vessel involved, Ave Maria, had departed from Tuthukudi in Tamil Nadu on November 23, carrying a cargo of fresh vegetables and fruits bound for the Republic of Maldives. Tragically, at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, the ship’s 150-meter radar mast collapsed onto its deck, causing significant flooding within the hull of the ship, which had a total displacement of four tonnes. The rapid influx of water led to the vessel sinking. This rescue highlights the crucial role of maritime cooperation and quick response in emergencies at sea.
