August 5, 2013 (LBT) – Today marks a significant milestone for Sri Lanka as the CMA CGM Pegasus, a remarkable 11,400 TEU container ship, arrives at Colombo Port. This event signifies the inauguration of the first phase of the Colombo Port Expansion Project, valued at an impressive $500 million and managed by the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT). Located strategically on the bustling east-west trade route, the newly developed South Port of Colombo features state-of-the-art facilities capable of accommodating the largest vessels in operation, including the Triple-E Class container ships that can carry up to 18,000 containers. Notably, the CICT is predominantly owned by China Merchant Holdings International, a state-run enterprise, holding an 85 percent stake. Industry experts highlight that this modern port will provide substantial advantages for shipping operators and freight companies alike, enhancing operational efficiencies in the region.

On September 30, 2010, a maritime incident occurred at Marsaxlokk Harbour, Malta, when the 32-meter Maltese tug 'Mari' (IMO: 8216851, 89 dwt) collided with the container ship 'CMA CGM Pegasus' during a berthing operation at Freeport Terminal 2 North. The collision transpired shortly before 3 p.m., causing significant damage to the tug's main mast, which was bent towards port. Despite the accident, the 'CMA CGM Pegasus' continued its journey, departing for Port Said in the early hours of October 2. Notably, the 'Mari', built in 1983, has been a dedicated vessel at Marsaxlokk, serving large container ships at Malta Freeport since 1996.
