CMA CGM Vela Linked to Oil Spill Incident in Marsaxlokk Port

Oct 15, 2020 12:26

On October 3, 2020, the renowned container ship 'CMA CGM Vela' was implicated in a significant oil spill at the port of Marsaxlokk, Malta. The incident prompted an immediate response from the Portuguese Maritime Accident Investigation Office after receiving a report from the local port authorities. The oil spill contaminated not only the vessel's upper deck but also the surrounding pier and the waters of the port itself. In response to this environmental emergency, the Portuguese investigation team has initiated a thorough gathering of evidence related to the spill. Following the incident, the 'CMA CGM Vela' departed from Marsaxlokk on October 4 at 3:15 PM and made its way to Beirut, with the arrival recorded on October 7.

Urgent Medevac Operation Near Columbia River

Jun 06, 2015 22:04

On June 5, 2015, a 51-year-old man was successfully medevaced from the container ship "CMA CGM Vela," located approximately 70 miles west of the Columbia River Bar. This urgent operation initiated when the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in Seattle received a distress signal from Rescue Coordination Center Bremen regarding a crew member exhibiting appendicitis symptoms. The incident was reported early on June 4 at 3:10 a.m. when the vessel was situated nearly 920 miles off the Washington coast. To ensure continuous monitoring of the patient's condition and the ship's location, JRCC Seattle implemented a rigorous four-hour communication schedule. At 4:30 a.m. on June 5, a Coast Guard aircrew from Air Station Sacramento, California, took off with an HC-130H Hercules aircraft to provide crucial aerial support. Arriving at the scene at 8:45 a.m., the Jayhawk helicopter crew faced challenges due to dense fog, which hampered their ability to perform the rescue hoist. In response, JRCC Seattle coordinated for the vessel to navigate closer to shore and subsequently dispatched a second MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew at approximately 3 p.m. This crew, based out of Air Station Astoria, Oregon, successfully hoisted the distressed man to safety and transported him to emergency medical services waiting at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
